Prof. Liu’s professional specialities are in opto-electronic devices and semiconductor technologies, especially thin-film transistor (TFT) and TFT-based functional opto-electronics for flat-panel displays (FPDs). TFT has been a critical component acting as a switch/driver device for active-matrix liquid-crystal display (AMLCD; TFT-LCD) and active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays. TFTs can even be extended to the applications of back-end-of-line (BEOL) compatible devices for vertical stacked hybrid CMOS large-scale integration (LSI) and 3D Monolithic IC technologies. On the other hand, for the sake of increasing display panel functionality, system-on-panel (SoP) technology is developed to enable various functional devices, such as display controllers (switch/driver), a frame memory, sensors and even a CPU interface to be integrated on a glass panel, eventually making external IC chips unnecessary. Especially, the concept of memory-in-pixel (MIP), embedding memory device or circuits into a display pixel, can effectively reduce power consumption of display circuit system to achieve the power-saving (green) displays. The technologies of high-performance/reliable TFT device, TFT process-compatible memory device and peripheral driving circuits on glass substrates are thereby critical to SoP development.
